Welsh: modern coinage, composed of the elements hedd peace + (g)wyn white, fair, blessed, holy. Use as a given name was popularized by the fame of the young poet Ellis Humphrey Evans who posthumously won the bardic chair at the National Eisteddfod in 1917, having been killed in the First World War; his bardic name was Hedd Wyn.
